In Colombia there is only one thing more voluptuous than the bodies that Botero painted: the food that overflows with the dishes. For those places you eat a lot (and very well), and we love that! So if you ask the question of ¿what to eat in Colombia?, that you know that you are in the right place: we will tell you 10 typical dishes of Colombian cuisine (to suck your mustache).

Aaaaafriends. Small rich, rich arepas are eaten in Colombia. You don't know what we are talking about? They are cakes made with cornmeal, in a round shape, cooked on the grill and that can be served in different ways: the simple ones are presented as such, with a little butter, but there are all kinds, from cheese arepas ( ooooh maaaaaai goooood) to arepas with meat / chicken / vegetables ... Depending on the area, there may be different arepas. In Cartagena, for example, egg arepas are typical.

Another perfect snack to snack between meals or as an entree. Colombian empanadas are quite different from Spanish empanadillas: the dough is usually thicker and the filling is usually meat. The best thing is that they are found in many bars and venues for very affordable prices, being an ideal bite to get out of the way.

In Colombia many soups are eaten (as they say ... they are even in the XD soup) and one of the richest is the ajiaco, typical of the Bogotá area. It is prepared with shredded chicken, Creole potatoes, white potatoes, sabaneras potatoes, corn and guasca. If you are thinking of a light soup before throwing yourself to the main course, let it be that this soup can be giant, so first make sure its size before continuing to order.

It is one of the most famous typical dishes of Colombia ... come on, that its fame precedes it, but make no mistake: even if you think you know it, the first meeting will leave you breathless (and at the end of the dish you will have to unbutton the pants button, I follow). It is a plate of rice, beans, ground beef, sausage, pork rind, arepa, egg and avocado. Light, light is not, but you have to try it at least once. In Antioquia you will find it everywhere.

Another dish not suitable for vegetarians ... the chopped is the Colombian response to the Argentine roast or to the Spanish barbecues, that is a slash of various types of meat (chicken, pork, veal, sausages, chorizo, etc,) that are accompanied with potatoes, Cobs, patacones, avocado and the always present arepas. The bite is not something that Colombians eat every day, it is rather a meal that is reserved for family gatherings or nights with friends. Try to try it at least once during your trip.

We tried this soup in the Coffee Axis (although there are all over the country) and it was one of the best meals of the entire trip. When they brought us the plate (silver) we fled in colors: that was giant! It is a soup with Creole potatoes, green banana, cassava, cob, arracha (a tuber), chicken (although it can also be beef or fish) and is accompanied with avocado and rice. If you have doubts, it is better to ask the waiter what does NOT carry the soup, instead of what it takes XD

Personally the Coffee Axis is the area where we ate the best!

It is one of the Colombian dishes that we liked the most. It is typical of the Salento area and the Coffee Axis. We tried it after the trekking in the Cocora Valley and it tasted like glory… they presented us with trout on a tray, coated entirely with a white garlic sauce with prawns. Rich, rich and foundation!

It is one of the typical dishes of the Colombian Caribbean, we ate it again and again in San Andres and Cartagena. It is a simple recipe and you will find in many local restaurants: the snapper (type of fish) is fried and is accompanied with patacones and coconut rice (delicious!). What are patacones? It is sliced banana that is fried after being crushed. There are those who love him and who hate him ... so try it and get out of doubt.

Tamales can be found in many countries of America, and Colombia is no exception. We tried them in Bogotá for breakfast (don't judge us!). The tamale is essentially a corn dough stuffed with the most varied ingredients (chickpeas, eggs, chicken, meat, bacon ...). It is prepared by wrapping it in a banana leaf and boiling or grilling slowly. An energy pump that we really liked! Come on ... it's one of the typical dishes that we recommend eating in Colombia 🙂

It is listen to the word "chorizo" and make my stomach chiribitas, so when I knew that one of the typical dishes of the Coffee Axis area, and specifically Santa Rosa de Cabal was a chorizo I did not think about it! The name refers to the way of cooking meat: cooked. In addition to the chorizos, there are also whole dishes with a mixture of meats accompanied by rice, cassava, also cooked potatoes, and salad.

To accompany these dishes, order some of the most famous drinks in Colombia, how are you:

  • The coffee, which is undoubtedly one of the best in the world. The coffee sen Colombia is called red and here you drink almost by liters and without adding sugar. It is almost more an infusion than anything else, since it is prepared with a filter and very hot water (but not boiling). To know more about the Colombian coffee culture, here we tell you our visit a coffee farm.
  • Fruit juice, of the best in the world. Seriously, fruit in Colombia will drive you crazy. You will find smoothies / juices in all restaurants, bars, beach bars ... You only have to choose the fruit and if you want it with milk or water. Our favorites are the juices of lulo and of passion fruit (with water). Addictive
  • Water with panela and cheese. It is a combination that may sound strange to our palate, but here it is almost a commandment. It is basically a glass of water with panela (sugar type), which is accompanied by a piece of soft cheese. Some people eat the cheese separately, but they told us that in the original recipe the cheese gets wet in the water. Ideal to replenish energies.

Do you know more typical dishes to eat in Colombia? We are looking forward to returning to this country that caught us so much (and to eat those rich arepas again and drink those juices hehe, why deny it!).
