It is the most famous lake in Italy, and the most glamorous, where even George Clooney left a little piece of heart. And no wonder, if we had your checking account we would also buy a villa here. Especially the towns that are on its banks usually fall in love with everyone who visits it. But it is not the only thing, there are palaces, gardens and corners full of charm. We warn you: you can not stop taking photos.

We did it by car, but if you want to tour the Lake Como area for free we recommend you do it for at least 2 days. If you prefer you can approach the city of Como by train, you will have to take it at the “Milano Cadorna” station and get off at the “Como Nord Lago” stop. The trip takes approximately one hour and the ticket costs € 4.80. Once in Como you can buy a day pass to use unlimited ferries (€ 20.70) and visit several villages. The one-day ticket, with unlimited travel costs. More info.

On tour

There is a tour that takes you to get to know the best of the Lake and includes an i / v bus to / from Como, a cruise on the Lake and a visit to the most beautiful village of Lake Como: Bellagio. It is a very good option if you do not want to rent a car and if you want to have a Spanish speaking guide. It lasts 10h and costs € 89. More info and reservations.

Cinque Terre is the name given to Monterosso, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola and Riomaggiore, 5 small towns on the coast of Liguria that have managed to make a foothold in the feed of each instagrammer worth its salt. Seriously, they became very fashionable a few years ago and it seems that there are few of us who (yet) have not surrendered to their charms. We will fall soon, we are sure.

It is the best option although we recommend you to spend the night in one of the villages, specifically in Monterosso, or you will not be able to fully enjoy the area.

To go there is a direct train from Milan to Monterosso (the first of the 5 villages). The trip takes just under 3 hours and the ticket costs from € 14,30. Of course, look carefully at the schedules on the site www.trenitalia.com because if there is no direct you will have to change in Genova and you will lose more time.

One tip: do not even think about going by car, apparently the parking issue is almost impossible and the roads are quite bad.

Tip: get a "Cinque Terre Treno MS Card" to get the trains between Gemova and the rest of the towns included, to enter the trails for trekking and have Wi-Fi, which never hurts. The one-day card costs € 16.

On tour

Recommended if you have little time and prefer to let yourself be guided by those who know the area very well. Includes transportation from / to Milan, cruise between Portovenere and Monterosso, visit of the villages Monterosso and Vernazza, train between Monterosso and Vernazza and Spanish guide. More info and reservation.

It is one of the least known cities in northern Italy, and paradoxically it is one of the most beautiful and elegant. Interesting and with an exciting history, Turin is an excellent option to get away from Milan.

Easy and cheap ... there are frequent trains from Milan Centrale to Turin (they take just under 2 hours and cost about € 14). No need to book, check out the schedules on the web www.trenitalia.com

It is not worth going on tour.

We have flown to Bergamo many times, but until our last excursion through Lombardia (the region to which Milan belongs) we had not set foot in that beautiful city. What a mistake! It turned out to be frankly very pretty. The fact of being quite small gives us a great advantage: you travel quietly in one day, plenty of time to go or return from Milan. It is essential to explore the upper city.

The Bernina Express runs through one of the most beautiful railway sections in Europe and the world. Throughout the trip, you will pass through forests, waterfalls, glaciers, valleys, mountains ... Come on: some fantastic views! If you have a few days of extra time in Milan it seems like a very good excursion. The train leaves from Tirano and arrives at St. Moritz, the so-called "Summit of the World", or beyond Davos and Chur.

For free

In case you want to go to your roll you will have to go to Tirano (€ 23 i / v from / to the Central Milan station) and from there take the Bernina Express train to St Moritz (2 hours, € 80 round trip). Book this last train with a long advance to not run out of your seat, you can do it on this website www.rhb.ch.
